Sustainability at WTT – Practical, Measurable, Meaningful

Rooted in Real Stewardship

The concept of sustainability is not new.

Centuries ago, foresters understood that forests could only remain productive if harvesting was balanced with natural regeneration. If you remove more wood than the forest can regrow — or fail to replant after clear-felling — the ecosystem collapses.

At WTT, we take inspiration from this principle: sustainable use of resources through responsible, forward-thinking practices.

Wood – A Naturally Renewable Resource

When managed responsibly, wood is one of the world’s most sustainable building materials.

Produced using nothing but sunlight, rain, CO₂, and nutrients from the soil, wood requires significantly less energy to produce and transport compared to materials like steel or concrete.

However, wood's environmental impact depends not only on how it is grown — but also on how long it lasts once harvested.

Extending Service Life – Making a Real Difference

The longer wood remains in use, the longer the carbon stored within it stays locked away — reducing environmental impact over time.

At WTT, we specialize in extending the service life of wood.

Through advanced thermal modification, impregnation, and surface treatments, our technologies can increase a wood product’s durability tenfold or more compared to untreated alternatives.

This significantly reduces the need for frequent replacement — and maximizes the value of each harvested tree.

Designed for Clean and Responsible Operation

Every WTT system is engineered with responsibility and efficiency in mind.

All of our treatment plants are designed to ensure that wood is drip-dry when it leaves the production facility.

This means:

  • No excess chemicals or liquids dripping onto the ground

  • Minimal risk of soil contamination

  • Efficient capture and recirculation of treatment fluids back into the system

This design approach is a practical commitment to minimizing environmental impact — not just during the wood’s service life, but already at the point of production.

Our Sustainable Approach – No Greenwashing

We don’t claim to make wood sustainable — nature already does that.

Our mission is to enhance the durability, performance, and responsible use of this remarkable natural material.

By using WTT-treated wood, customers make a genuine, measurable contribution to a more sustainable built environment — based on science, quality, and common sense.

History and Ownership –
Nearly Half a Century of Leadership

A Legacy of Innovation Since 1977.

WTT’s roots trace back to The Danish Wood Treating Company (DWT), founded in Denmark in 1977.

DWT emerged as a spin-off from one of Europe’s oldest creosote treatment companies, originally established in 1838.

The founder, Niels Moldrup, combined his background in forest science with a passion for engineering — leading him to design advanced wood treatment vessels that quickly gained recognition for their innovation and quality. His pioneering spirit set the foundation for DWT’s evolution into a leading independent technology provider for the timber industry.

An Evolving Journey

Over the years, the company has adapted and expanded, trading under names such as IWT and Iwotech between 1980 and 2000.

You will still find these names proudly displayed on many of the older plants delivered during that period.

In 2003, the company was rebranded to WTT – Wood Treatment Technology to better reflect our broader vision and specialized expertise within wood modification and preservation.

Today, after 48 years of continuous growth, WTT remains committed to pushing the boundaries of technology and delivering high-performance wood treatment solutions to clients around the world.

At WTT, history is not just about where we come from — it's the foundation for where we're going.

Ownership and Leadership

WTT is a privately owned company, shaped by strong leadership and long-term commitment.

The majority of the shares are held by Peter Klaas, while Jakob Jakobsen, who serves as Managing Director, also holds an ownership stake.
Together, they ensure that WTT remains independent, focused, and agile — with a clear vision for sustainable growth, technological innovation, and outstanding customer service.

Their combined experience and dedication provide the foundation for WTT’s continued success in the global wood treatment industry.

Our Values –
The Foundation of Everything We Do

At WTT, our values are more than just words — they define how we think, act, and collaborate every day. They are reflected in our work, our relationships, and the way we create positive impact for our customers and partners.
